Clashes in the Three Hill Districts: Tensions and Political Background
Moinul Islam Rajon: In the Khagrachari district, a recent clash in the Sadar Upazila led to the death of Md. Mamun (30). On September 18, Mamun was beaten to death by a local mob on allegations of motorcycle theft. After the incident, the police recovered his body and handed it over to his family following an autopsy.
The day after the murder, on September 19, students from Dighinala College held a protest march. While passing through the Boalkhali Bazaar, members of the terrorist organization UPDF (Main) fired about 20-30 rounds at the protesters. In retaliation, the enraged crowd set fire to several shops in the market. A total of six people from both sides were injured and admitted to a local hospital.
Patrolling to Control the Situation:
To bring the situation under control, the army and police quickly arrived at the scene, began patrolling, and helped manage the fire. Since the clash, tension has spread across Khagrachari Sadar, Dighinala, Panchari, and surrounding areas. The situation has worsened due to various rumors circulating on social media.
In light of the clash, a joint decision was made for the army, BGB, police, and Ansar forces to patrol together to maintain law and order. The patrolling began on the night of September 19. Additionally, special meetings were organized with local leaders to prevent violence and promote peace.
Political Background and the Independence Movement:
This recent incident has sparked renewed discussions about the political situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Experts believe that the activities of independence activists in this historically unstable region are on the rise. Many are comparing the situation in the Hill Tracts to the separatist movements in India's Seven Sister states, speculating that there may be attempts to create new chaos in the region.
According to experts, India’s intelligence agencies and Myanmar's military may be inciting rebel groups to foster political unrest in the area. In this context, it is crucial for the Bangladesh government to take swift action and closely monitor suspected groups. Accusations have also surfaced against organizations like ISKCON and Bidyanondo for allegedly supporting the rebels.
Government Actions and Future Plans:
The government and law enforcement agencies are doing their utmost to maintain peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. However, it is time to reassess the overall situation in the region to prevent future clashes and political instability.
